Late power play goal sinks Storm

Jan 4, 2020 | 11:03 AM

The Grande Prairie Storm were 22 seconds away from pulling out at least a point in a game that they trailed at one point 3-1.

Kiano Robinson’s goal on a late 3rd period power play pushed the Drumheller Dragons to a 4-3 win over the Storm, in the first game for the home side after the Christmas break.

“I thought we deserved a better fate.” said Storm coach Ryan Aasman after the game. “I don’t think that was a penalty late in the game but the call was made and we have to learn to kill off that penalty.”

“But we have a young team that has to learn to go through a little bit of adversity, so I don’t necessarily think it is a bad thing to lose a game like that. “

Aasman was very happy with the effort put forth by his team, especially to battle back from a 3-1, second period deficit.

The Storm would open the scoring as Brett Meerman fired home his fourth of the season at the 15;31 mark of the opening period.

The Dragons would get the next three goals to open up their two goal lead, as Scout truman (17:45 – 1st), Robinson (5:52 – 2nd), and Eric Martin (9:18, 2nd) found the score sheet.

But the Storm comeback would start 25 seconds later, as Jackson Wozniak one timed a feed from Meerman for his 6th of the season.

Then, while killing a penalty late in the second, Brent Loukus took a feed from Jarin Sutton at the side of the net to pick up his third goal of the season to tie the game at 3.

The Storm did have a chance to take the lead late in third, as they had a 5-on-3 power play for 1:19, but were unable to capitalize.

Aasman admits that missed opportunity took away some momentum from his club..

“That’s on me, because we have not worked a lot on 5-on-3’s since I took over.” said Aasman. “We have worked lots on 5-on-4 but not on 5-on-3. And you can see how 5-on-3 is critical in a game like that. You know that if you do not score on the 5-on-3 that you are likely going to have the next call go against you.”

“We have to execute there, and that is another good learning experience for us.”

The Storm return to action Saturday when they host Olds at 7:30 at Revolution Place.
