Premier Kenney saddened that Albertans were killed in Iran plane crash

Jan 9, 2020 | 7:42 AM

Premier Jason Kenney says he’s saddened that a large number of Albertans were among the 176 people killed in the plane crash near Tehran.

He says Alberta has been enriched by what he describes as “a small but dynamic and highly educated Iranian community.”

Kenney says it’s a terrible day for members of that community and offers condolences to them as well as the families of the victims.

The University of Alberta says at least 10 members of the school community have been killed in the Ukrainian airlines plane crash in Iran.

University of Alberta President David Turpin says the victims include students, faculty members and alumni — but he says the school can’t yet confirm names or exact numbers.

A friend says engineering professor Payman Paseyan was among those killed along with his wife and two young daughters while other victims from Edmonton include a gynecologist and her two daughters.
