Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection seeking nominees for Northwest Alberta Sport Excellence Awards

Jan 12, 2020 | 5:00 AM

The Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection will be hosting their 6th annual Northwest Alberta Sport Excellence Awards on March 6, 2020.

The awards give members of their respective communities in northwestern Alberta a chance to nominate somebody they feel has excelled at their sport or has made a positive impact in their community.

Karna Germshied from the Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection, says the awards include both high performance and community awards.

“What we’ve really tried to do is focus on the nominees, recognizing that without the people that are grinding out there, without the volunteers that are contributing, without the business that are supporting, this kind of sport wouldn’t live. It’s a night of celebration.”

There are 12 categories that you can nominate somebody for, the awards consist of the following

  • Female & Male Athlete of the Year
  • Junior Female & Male Athlete of the Year
  • Team of the Year
  • Coach of the year
  • Developmental Coach of the Year
  • Outstanding Official
  • Sport Builder
  • Unsung Hero
  • Sport Event of the Year
  • Community Sportsmanship Award

Those nominated are invited to attend a banquet that will consist of cocktails, speeches and guest speakers. A location for the event is to be announced at a later date. Tickets will go on sale February 1.

“Nominations are the hardest thing, we all recognize and know somebody that should be nominated. We need to make sure that those nominators are out there putting in their submissions so that they can come through and be celebrated,” said Germshied.

The nominations deadline for the awards is January 31. Nominations can be made through the Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection website.
