Senior High Basketball Classic returns to Grande Prairie

Jan 14, 2020 | 5:00 AM

The Senior High Basketball Classic returns to Grande Prairie on January 17 and 18.

The tournament features 16 different boys and girls teams from across the Peace Region that compete over the two-day tourney.

Every high school in Grande Prairie is represented in the tournament. There are also teams from Dawson Creek, Sexsmith, Beaverlodge, and Fort St. John participating.

Attendance for the tournament is also strong throughout the weekend.

“The tournament is generally a huge turnout, especially for our local teams,” said Bill Bradley, an organizer for the tournament as well as the Head Coach of the GPRC Women’s Basketball team. “The city has developed some great rivalries amongst the local schools, so it’s always great to see the fans come out for those games.”

In the tournament, each team will play a minimum of three games over the two days. There are also prizes for the top three teams.

One thing that stands out about the tournament is that several players that played in the tournament have gone on to play basketball at the college and university levels.

Bradley says his current roster for GPRC has seven players who played in the tournament when they were younger. So, there is a track record of players going onto have good careers post-high school.

The two-day tournament also features a unique relationship with GPRC when it comes to putting on an event of this magnitude.

“Most of our volunteers come from our other varsity teams. Whenever we host an event, we get all our student-athletes out to help support each other,” said Bradley.

The first game of the tournament tips off Friday at 3:40 p.m. at various schools across Grande Prairie. The full schedule can be found here.
