Grande Prairie Curling Club bidding for 2022 Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts

Jan 22, 2020 | 2:55 PM

The Grande Prairie Curling Club is submitting a bid to host the 2022 Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The provincial tournament brings together the best curlers in the province, who will compete in the four-day tournament for a chance to represent Alberta at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Players who have gone onto represent Alberta in the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts include Chelsea Carey, Val Sweeting and Shannon Kelibrink.

“We are a community that has a long history of curling and a very involved curling community,” said Nicole Shirvell, the General Manager of the Grande Prairie Curling Club. “We also have several curlers that have gone onto higher levels of competition. We want to help grow the sport.”

Cities that are interested in hosting the event have until January 31 to submit a bid. At the moment, it is unknown how many cities have put a bid through to Curling Alberta.

The bid package submitted by the club has to have several key features. These things include letters of support from communities, businesses and volunteer organizations, and close proximity to hotels and airports.

The city has hosted several major curling events before. They hosted the Scotties Tournament of Hearts back in 2016, the 2015 Canada Cup of Curling and the 2006 Ford World Women’s Championships.

Shirvell is asking businesses and volunteer organizations in the community to write letters of support to help the bid’s chances at winning. The more letters that are written, the better the bid looks to Curling Alberta. Letters can be submitted to manager@gpcurling.ca

The deadline for cities to bid for the tournament is on January 31. The winning bid will be announced on March 1.
