Privacy commissioner to consider investigation into liquor store I.D. scanners

Jan 22, 2020 | 12:29 PM

EDMONTON – Alberta’s privacy commissioner is considering an investigation into a liquor retailer’s decision to test an ID-scanning technology to address a growing number of thefts at its stores.

Edmonton-based Alcanna Ltd., which runs Liquor Depot, Wine and Beyond and Nova Cannabis, announced the measure earlier this week.

The CEO has said the company that developed the scanning system has been working with privacy officers in Alberta, Canada and across North America.

A statement from Alberta privacy commissioner Jill Clayton says there has been no consultation with her office on the pilot project.

The statement says assertions by the companies that the identification scanning system complies with privacy laws in Alberta are misleading.

A spokesman says an independent analysis of the technology has not be completed by Clayton’s office and she first heard about the project through media reports on Monday.
