Storm fall 4-1 to Saints, look to rebound against Bobcats

Jan 22, 2020 | 10:21 AM

The Grande Prairie Storm lost their second straight game last night 4-1 to the Spruce Grove Saints.

The game started positive for the Storm, they were able to draw two penalties in the first 10 minutes of the game but couldn’t solve Saints goalie Matthew Davis.

Following the stretch of early powerplays the Storm found themselves playing some undisciplined hockey late in the period.

The Storm would take 10 minutes worth of minor penalties in a five-minute stretch, sending the Saints to some lengthy power plays and giving them some time on the five on three.

The Saints would make the Storm pay, scoring at the 14:19 mark of the first on the power play, with the goal from Tanner Klassen to make it 1-0.

One of the minor penalties taken by the Storm saw Brenden Kwiatkowski getting ejected from the game for a check from behind.

Despite the lengthy time for the Saints on the man advantage, the Storm were able to escape with only the one goal given up.

In the second, Nick Leyer would add to the Saints lead with a goal 5:42 into the period making it 2-0.

Late in the second period, Storm defenseman Will Schimek would become the second Storm player ejected from the game following a five-minute kneeing penalty.

With Schimek and Kwiatkowski out for the game, the Storm were down to just four defensemen. The Storm would survive the five-minute powerplay, once again without giving up a goal.

In the third period, Reid Schaefer would extend the Saints lead to 3-0.

Ethan Strang would score the only goal for the Storm on the powerplay, to make it 3-1 midway through the third, but that’s as close as they would get in the game.

The Storm have scored a powerplay goal in five straight games.

Stanley Cooley would add a shorthanded empty netter to give the Saints the 4-1 victory.

The Storm will look to re-group right away as they continue their stretch of four games in five days. Tonight, the team travels to Lloydminster to take on the Bobcats.

The Bobcats sit last overall in the AJHL standings but are coming off the biggest upset of the season when they defeated the Brooks Bandits 4-3 last Friday night.

Puck drop for tonight’s game is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Centennial Civic Centre Arena in Lloyd.
