Storm end two game slide against Bobcats

Jan 23, 2020 | 10:36 AM

The Grande Prairie Storm ended their two-game losing streak Wednesday night, defeating the Lloydminster Bobcats 3-2. The team was coming off back to back road games, that saw them face the Spruce Grove Saints one day earlier.

Before the game, the AJHL announced that they had suspended Will Schimek for two games for kneeing. Schimek was given a five-minute kneeing penalty and game misconduct on the play. He will miss Friday’s game against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.

Because Schimek was suspended, the team called up Dylan McFatridge from the Major Midget AAA South Side Athletic Club in Edmonton. McFatridge has 23 points in 26 games this season.

In the game, the Storm didn’t get off to the start they wanted. Brendan Morrow of the Bobcats picked up the opening goal just 2:20 into the first to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

Not long after the slow start, the Storm rallied back midway through the first period. Juliano Santalucia would score his second goal of the season, to tie the game at one.

Following the Santalucia goal, Cade Mason and Ethan Strang would add two more for the Storm before the end of the period, to make it a 3-1 game after 20 minutes of play.

The second period was quiet for both teams with no scoring, and though the Storm went to the powerplay twice, they were unable to convert.

The third period saw the Bobcats make things interesting with a goal from Gunner Kinniburgh at the 13:41 mark of the third to make it 3-2, but that’s as close as they’d get.

Storm goalie Kaeden Lane would turn away 33 of 35 shots on the night to help the team grab the victory.

The Storm continue their stretch of four games in five days on Friday at Revolution Place. The team returns home for back to back games against their rivals, the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. Puck drop for both games is 7:30 p.m.
