Canucks increase lead in NPHL standings, defeat Athletics

The Dawson Creek Canucks increased their first-place lead in the NPHL to four points, as they defeated the Grande Prairie Athletics 3-1 on Thursday for the second straight game.

In the first period, the Canucks struck first with a goal from Braeden Allkins on the power play to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead at 14:34 of the first period.

Late in the second, the Athletics would respond with a goal coming from Braden Crone at to tie things up at 1-1.

The tied game wouldn’t last long though, as the Canucks would retake the lead thanks to an Owen LaClare goal with under a minute remaining in the frame.

The Canucks extended their lead to 3-1 midway through the third, as Kevin Swales would score the insurance marker to secure the win.

Despite the loss, the Athletics outshot Dawson Creek 48-30 on the night. Canucks goaltender Payton Lee made 47 saves in the victory.

The Athletics will play their next game on Saturday when they travel to Falher to face the Pirates.

The Canucks aren’t in action until next Thursday when they rematch against the Athletics at the Coke Centre in Grande Prairie. That game will be the final game fo the regular season for the Athletics.
