Locally-made documentary about double-amputee from Grande Prairie to air Friday

Jan 24, 2020 | 5:30 AM

A local-produced documentary about a double-amputee who used to live in the Swan City will be shown on television tonight.

It is called The Invincible James Lee and will be shown on AMItv. Showtimes will be 6 p.m. and midnight Friday.

Director Rew Jones says he was working on another film about a sledge hockey tournament being organized by the Grande Prairie Wolverines when he came across Lee’s story.

“While we were filming that documentary, James discovered that he was going to lose his second leg to amputation, so he would become a double-amputee. As we talked about that with him, we just realized that there was a story that deserved to be told there.”

Jones says they wanted to look at how becoming a double-amputee impacted Lee.

“We started following him since before it was 100 per cent confirmed that he was getting the surgery. It just sounded like it might happen. We were there at the doctor’s appointment when it was confirmed that he would be taking the second leg. We were there when he found out the date of that. We were actually in the surgery and then we were with him after for a little piece (of his) recovery.

Jones adds Lee is doing well.

“I think there’s still a lot of challenges to face, but it’s incredible to watch the way James has committed himself to encouraging other people and helping them as they think through things and encounter different situations and (he tries) to be an encouragement.”

Jones says Lee Moved to Red Deer to be closer to family and other supports.
