It was a tough go for Peace Region curlers down at the Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The women’s provincial curling championship wrapped up on Sunday evening in Okotoks, with the Laura Walker rink out of Edmonton claiming their first provincial title with a 7-4 win over Kelsey Rocque. The win completed a perfect run at the Scotties for the 29-year-old Walker, who went 9-0 during the competition.

Walker is the wife of Beaverlodge curler Geoff Walker.

In total, there were four teams with Peace Region ties at the event. The Casey Scheidegger rink, which features Grande Prairie’s Kristie Moore and Cary-Anne McTaggart, dropped three straight matches to close out the round robin to finish with a record of 2-5 and out of a playoff spot.

Nampa’s Kayla Skrlik also finished with a 2-5 record at her first-ever Scotties. Sexsmith’s Janais DeJong played alongside the Marla Sherrer rink out of Lacombe, who also finished with the same record and out of a playoff spot.

Beaverlodge product Stephanie Enright was the lone Peace Country rep to make the playoffs, as she played with the Nicky Kaufman rink. Kaufman fell to Krysta Hilker 11-7 in the 3-4 page playoff on Saturday.

Walker will now represent Alberta at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, which goes from February 15-23 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Calgary’s Chelsea Carey is also in, playing with Team Canada as the defending champions.
