Grande Prairie Athletics head into regular season finale in battle for first place

Jan 30, 2020 | 9:47 AM

The Grande Prairie Athletics head into their regular-season finale tonight as they host the best team in the North Peace Hockey League, the Dawson Creek Canucks.

The two rivals met twice in three days last week in Dawson Creek, where the Canucks won both games 3-1.

With the two losses, the Athletics suffered their first two-game losing streak on the season.

The Athletics come into tonight’s game with a record of 13-3-1 and 27 points. A win tonight in regulation against the Canucks would put the Athletics first place in the standings, tied with the Canucks at 29 points for the time being.

Dawson Creek holds a record of 14-1-1 for 29 points and has an extra game in hand over the Athletics. If the Canucks can pull off a win tonight or Saturday against the Manning Comets, they will clinch first place in the NPHL and home ice throughout the playoffs.

Tonight’s game gets underway at 8:30 p.m. from the Coke Centre.
