Girls fastball league looking to make a return to Grande Prairie

Jan 31, 2020 | 5:30 AM

Grande Prairie has been without a girl’s fastball league for 15 years, and members from the community are trying to bring it back.

Ashley Porterfield and the Grande Prairie Pirates are launching clinics over the next couple of months to introduce girls to the sport and try to get the league up and running again.

“The Grande Prairie Pirates have donated their time and donated the cost for using the County Sportsplex pitch, so we’re able to put on a free clinic for girls ages eight to 18,” said Porterfield. “Last week the younger girls were working on the basics and the older girls were working on pitching.”

The clinics started this past month and people from across the Peace Region have showed up to them. As of right now, they have 52 girls registered for the clinics.

There is no limit on how many people can participate in the clinics. Porterfield says that they want to see as many people as possible participate, so they can help grow the game.

The upstart league is also looking for umpires. They are planning an umpire clinic, and those details will be announced at a later date.

The best way for people interested in signing up for the clinics is by contacting Porterfield on her Facebook.

Porterfield also stresses that the league needs sponsors. The more sponsors that the league can obtain, the more cost-effective the league will be on registration fees.

The next clinic takes place on February 16 at the County Sportsplex Field House from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Registration for the league is expected to open before March 1.
