Purdy’s Chocolatier officially opens at the Prairie Mall

The Purdy’s Chocolatier officially opened Saturday, February 1, in the Prairie Mall.

The announcement of the chocolate store coming to the mall was made this past September.

Karen Jones, Area Manager for Purdy’s Chocolatier, says the opening has been a long time coming.

“This is really exciting. Everybody’s been asking for this for a very long time and we have a good chance to meet a new market and get some new chocolates out here, so we’re pretty excited.”

The store opened at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, with Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given cutting the purple ribbon.

“We are very proud to be a Canadian-owned and operated company, and (we use) only 100% sustainable cocoa,” Said Jones. “Which means we only purchase our cocoa from farms where we’ve provided farmer education, community services, community programs, libraries and clean water filters, so, we’re very proud of that.”

Purdy’s first store was opened in Vancouver in 1907 by founder Richard C. Purdy.
