CORRECTION: The M.D. of Greenview has corrected their original news release, clarifying that the fire responded to by area fire crews was at the Wapiti Open Lodge, which is operated by Horizon North about five kilometres from the Keyera Wapiti Gas Plant. The lodge is used by Keyera staff and contractors, according to the updated release. The story has been updated with the corrected information below.

A fire that broke out at the Wapiti Open Lodge early Monday morning is now under investigation.

According to a release from the M.D. of Greenview, the Grovedale Fire Department was called out around 3 a.m. on February 10 to a fully involved fire, about 47 kilometres south of Grovedale. County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Services were called in to assist shortly after.

DeBolt and Grande Cache fire stations were also called in due to the remote location of the camp, making water sources limited.

“Despite the limited water supply, attending fire crews did an exemplary job of containing the fire and then completely extinguishing at approximately 1100 hrs,” said Greenview Regional Fire Chief Wayne Brown, in the release.

The cause of the blaze is unknown at this time. No injuries to Keyera staff or fire crews were reported.
