Storm begin home stand against Thunder looking to end eight game losing streak

Feb 11, 2020 | 1:16 PM

The Grande Prairie Storm will be looking to right the ship, and avoid a season high nine game losing skid tonight when they host the Drayton Valley Thunder in the first of a double header at Revolution Place.

It was a frustrating weekend the Storm are returning home from, as the team saw their losing streak extend to eight games following losses to Drayton Valley, Sherwood Park and Spruce Grove.

A positive from the road trip saw the team find their scoring touch. Friday in Drayton Valley saw the team fall 5-4 in the shootout and Saturday they lost 7-5 against the Sherwood Park Crusaders.

Prior to this weekend, the Storm had only registered six goals in five games.

“I thought we played well the first two nights,” said Coach Ryan Aasman. “I liked a lot of stuff that we did against Sherwood Park and I thought it was just an off day on Sunday.”

The Storm come into tonight’s game having not won a home game since January 4. Since their last win on home ice, the teams dropped 12 of 15 games.

Grande Prairie and Drayton Valley have met three times this season and will close out their regular season series Wednesday night.

The Storm are 0-1-2 against the Thunder this year and lost all three games by just one goal.

When asked about how the Storm end their eight-game losing streak, coach Aasman put it simple.

“Show up, play the right way tonight. Learn from our mistakes, come out hungry and stop accepting losing. Let’s find a way to get it done.”

An interesting storyline for tonight’s game will see a familiar face on the other side of the bench.

Former Storm Head Coach and Assistant General Manager Matt Keillor is now an Assistant Coach for the Thunder. It marks the first time that Keillor has coached in Grande Prairie since he was let go by the team in December.

Aasman spoke about facing his former bench boss and had high praise for him.

“I think it’s fun and it adds parity to the league. I can’t thank Keillor enough for what he did for me coming in. He’s a great man and a hungry coach that’s looking to learn more. I think the situation for him in Drayton Valley is great. I think that he’ll be a head coach somewhere in the very near future and I’m happy that he’s had some success.”

Following the recent road trip, the Storm saw Goaltender Lars Kaliel start all three games as Kaeden Lane stayed home and recovered from an injury.

Lane has recovered from the injury and will get the start tonight against the Thunder. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. at Revolution Place.
