Storm drop ninth straight game, gear up for rematch against Thunder

Feb 12, 2020 | 1:32 PM

The Grande Prairie Storm’s season high losing streak stretched to nine games Tuesday night as they fell 3-2 to the Drayton Valley Thunder.

“We were invisible for 60 minutes tonight,” said coach Ryan Aasman after the game.

Following an uneventful first period by both teams, the Storm would send the Thunder to the powerplay early in the second following a Nathan Morgan hooking penalty.

The powerplay resulted in Colson Gengenbach riffling home 11th of the season to give the Thunder the 1-0 lead.

Five minutes after the opening goal, Grayson Reid would extend the Thunder lead to 2-0 midway through the second period.

The Storm looked to be one step behind in the opening 40 minutes. Some bad penalties in the second from the Storm sent Drayton Valley to the powerplay, however, the penalty kill was strong for the most part and able to keep them in the game.

After a bit of time on the kill, the Storm would head to a powerplay of their own with under five minutes to play in the second.

On the powerplay, Brody Dale would pick up the rebound and score off a scramble in front of the net, making it a 2-1 game at the second intermission.

The third period saw the Storm get the start they wanted.

The team carried a powerplay heading into the first minute of the third period.

Austin Schellenberg would add his seventh of the season 25 seconds into the frame to tie the game at 2-2.

The goal came with some controversy, as Thunder forward Dexton Mozell would go down in the corner and was in some pain. A couple of Thunder players stood around, waiting for a whistle, but a whistle never went. The play was allowed to continue, and the Storm would get the tying goal.

When it looked like the Storm were building momentum, they headed back to the penalty kill.

On the kill the Storm couldn’t clear the puck and Brown University commit Matthew Kinash would add the go-ahead goal, helping send the Thunder to victory.

Despite the loss for the Storm, goaltender Kaden Lane, in his return from injury after missing three games, was solid in net.

“I thought he was sharp. I thought gave us a chance to win tonight, and he made a lot of undercover really good stops. I thought he was our only player tonight,” said Aasman.

Grande Prairie will look to end their nine-game losing streak Wednesday night, as they rematch with the Drayton Valley Thunder in the second game of a back to back.
