Bear Creek Folk Fest hosting first ever song contest

Feb 15, 2020 | 5:00 AM

The Bear Creek Folk Festival is hosting its first-ever song contest, which gives local artists a chance to showcase their talents, and a chance to compete in a big competition.

“This is the first year we’ve run this. It’s a little bit like a folk version of ‘Battle of the Bands’ except with a real focus on original material,” said Festival organizer Sarah Card.

The song must be an original that is written and performed by yourself, you’re not allowed to perform a song that already exists.

There are three different categories contestants can enter: solo, band, and audience choice.

Anybody from the Peace Country is allowed to enter the competition. The deadline to enter is February 20. You can enter here.

Once your application is submitted, the committee will select people from the applications and contact them for the semi-finals on February 28 and 29. Those take place at Prairie Hall inside the Bear Creek Funeral Home.

The top acts at the semi-finals will be invited to attend the finals on March 13 at the KMSC Performing Arts Theatre at John Paul II school.

“Although it’s a competition, this is a great way of putting together a bunch of fantastic local talent into a wonderful evening of music. Regardless of who wins or loses it’s going to be a wonderful event,” said Card.

There are several cash prizes between $500 – $1000 up for grabs.

The grand prize gives the winner a chance to record their song in a professional audio booth and tp have a professional music video produced.

There is also a wild card entry that gets a “tweener” spot at the 2020 Bear Creek Folk Festival, which gives somebody an opportunity to play a couple of songs in between sets at the festival.

“We are really excited to put this on and showcase some of the amazing talents that Grande Prairie has to offer,” added Card.
