Coach blasts club after horrible effort by Storm in loss

On paper, it was perhaps the best opportunity for the Grande Prairie Storm to snap their current winless streak.

The Calgary Canucks entered the game with the worst record in the AJHL at 8-43-2, and had won just 2 road games all season.

But it would be the Canucks that were triumphant, as a three goal third period powered them to a 4-1 win over the Storm, who are now winless in 11 straight games.

“That was brutal.” stated coach Ryan Aasman after the game. “I thought our locker room was brutal. I thought our leadership was terrible. I thought our “Give A” meter was brutal.”

“It was completely unacceptable. We did not deserve the Storm logo at all today.”

The Canucks opened the scoring in the first on Dylan Clark’s first of two goals on the evening.

But Carter Myrol would put the hosts back on even terms in the second period, potting his sixth of the season.

Calgary would secure the win in the thid, as Carter Benoit, Clark, and Alex Heal (into an empty net) would all find the back of the net.

Emotions got the better of the Storm late in the third, as both Lars Kaliel and Juliano Santalucia took penalties after the whistle to give the Canucks a brief 5-on-3 power play.

That was, however, one of the few positives that Aasman pulled from the game.

“I would have loved to have seen that passion over the last 8-10 games. I am sure the fans would have appreciated that too instead of wasting their hard earned money.”

The loss was even more stinging for the Storm, as a win would have clinched sixth place in the North division after Fort McMurray fell in a shoot out at home to Sherwood Park.

Instead, the Oil Barons were able to pull within three points of the Storm, with Grande Prairie still holding two games in hand.

That now magnifies even further a matchup between the Storm and Oil Barons that will take place next Friday night in Fort McMurray.

“Obviously, we have a lot of work to do.” added Aasman. “It is right down to our core fundamentals. We have zero culture, we have zero pride in the team.”

“We have nothing right now, so let’s build it back up.”
