City looking at reductions to community group funding

Feb 16, 2020 | 7:00 AM

Grande Prairie City Council is looking at potential cuts to community group funding.

At Monday’s Council Meeting, Administration was directed to report back to Council with a report with possible recommendations to see a ten per cent reduction in Community Group Funding for the 2021 year.

The Community Services Committee was presented with recommendations for reductions to community group funding for the 2021 and 2022 years at committee meetings on February 4, where the committee decided to send a $250,000 reduction with possible group exemptions to Council for approval.

Stephanie Cajolais with the City, says group exemptions are no longer part of Council’s direction.

“The direction provided to Administration was just to look at the total envelope of the grant funding, so no groups would be excluded.”

“The City certainly understands the importance of these groups and this type of funding in the community” said Cajolais, “and we’re also committed to financial responsiblity across the organization.”

There is no set date for the report to return from Administration.
