JDA Kings take game one over Flyers in double overtime Tuesday

Feb 19, 2020 | 11:57 AM

The County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings have taken the upper hand in their NWJHL quarterfinal, as they claimed game one over the Fairview Flyers 5-4 in double overtime on Tuesday night.

In the first period, the Flyers opened the scoring with a powerplay goal from Dawson Blanchette to make it 1-0.

After the opening goal, the Kings wouldn’t make the Flyers lead last long, as they would respond with two goals of their own taking a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Corbin Doram would open the scoring for the Kings midway through the second to give the Kings a 3-1 lead at 11:22 of the period.

After falling behind by two, the Flyers would rally back with two goals in less than two minutes to send the teams into the second intermission tied at three.

The third frame remained scoreless until late in the period. Blanchette would add his second goal of the night to give the Flyers a 4-3 lead with just under five minutes to play, giving them their first lead since the game’s opening goal.

After it appeared that the Flyers would have the game one victory after the late goal, Darby Berg would score with 47 seconds remaining to tie the game for the Kings and send it to overtime.

The first overtime remained scoreless, but double overtime would find a hero.

Kings forward Aiden Brown would strip the Flyers Kyle Cairns of the puck not far from his own net, shovel the puck on net, hit the far post and pick up his own rebound to score the game winner and give the Kings a 5-4 double overtime victory.

The Kings outshot the Flyers 57-45 in the victory. Game two is set for Thursday at the Crosslink County Sportsplex, puck drop at 8:30 p.m.

On the other side of the NWJHL playoffs bracket, the Dawson Creek Junior Canucks open their best-of-five series tonight against the Sundown Oilfield Sexsimth Vipers at 8:00 p.m. in Dawson Creek.
