City Council to request AUMA’s support against potential Provincial changes to local elections

Feb 24, 2020 | 5:55 PM

At Monday’s meeting, Grande Prairie City Council approved a Request For Decision (RFD) that supports the City’s stance on the province’s proposed changes to municipal elections.

It will now be presented at the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, Spring Municipal Leaders Caucus.

Currently, the Province is reviewing the Local Authorities Election Act to address what they see as potential gaps, including the length of the campaign period, the nomination process, campaign finances, third-party advertising and recall of municipally elected officials.

The act was last reviewed and revised following local elections in 2017

The Province has an online survey for public consultations on the matter.

The City’s stance is that local elections should remain focused on local issues and on local time, and are specifically against the Province holding referendums and senate elections at the same time as the 2021 municipal election.

In the Request for Decision, the City says they believe the proposed referendums are important enough that Albertans should be involved, but not have to focus on them as opposed to local matters, and that senate elections should be separate to keep senators accountable for federal issues.

No one from City Council was made available to EverythingGP to speak on the matter following Monday’s meeting.
