A’s setup rematch of 2019 NPHL final with game five win over Manning

The Grande Prairie Athletics are heading to the NPHL final for the second time in as many years, after defeating the Manning Comets 2-1 in overtime in game five of the NPHL semi-finals.

After a first period that didn’t see much, the Athletics got on the board to open the scoring in the second, as Adam Boytinck scored on the powerplay midway through the frame to make it 1-0 Athletics.

Six minutes after the Athletics scored, the Comets responded and tied the game with a Layne Maclean goal with 6:27 remaining in the period.

Both teams tightened down defensively in the third and both goalies stopped the shots they had to, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, Braden Crone became the overtime hero for the Athletics with assists coming from Tanner Labbe and Kyle Lipinski to send them into NPHL final against the Dawson Creek Canucks.

The finals get underway Tuesday night in Dawson Creek. Game two will then go Thursday, March 5 at the Coca-Cola Centre
