Pink Shirt Day supports anti-bullying at local schools

Today is Pink Shirt Day, a day where school staff and students, as well as community members, are encouraged to wear pink to show support for anti-bullying.

Bob Stewart, Superintendent of the Peace Wapiti Public School Division, says the day started after two students wore a pink shirt to school after a younger, Grade 9 student was harassed for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school.

“The foundational message behind the movement is that, students have the ability to create change. That is, when they take a stand against wrong behaviours and show support for one another, it can have a positive impact.”

This year’s message for the day is ‘lift each other up’ and to encourage people to see past differences.

Stewart says there are ways to encourage the message, even without a pink shirt.
