Odyssey House Executive Director moving on

Feb 28, 2020 | 4:23 PM

Odyssey House is looking for a new Executive Director.

After nearly four years in the post, Ebony Rempel has decided to move on.

She thinks building the shelter’s recognition in the community is one of many things accomplished in that time.

“We’ve increased our donations. Our operating budget has increased (in part) because of the injection of funds from the provincial government in 2015. We also have a secondary building that we’ve been able to have fully (operational).”

She adds she is most proud of Odyssey House staff learning about Trauma-Informed Practice.

“We’ve done a lot of work over the last few years really looking at our practice, looking at the women and children we serve, and finding the best ways in which to support them.”

Rempel is hoping this work continues after she leaves.

“Recognizing that the people that are accessing our services have experienced trauma in their lives and that, perhaps, some of the behaviours or the circumstances that they’re in are not necessarily related to choices that they’ve made, but circumstances that haven’t, perhaps, been afforded to them and the trauma that they’ve experienced.”

Rempel is moving to Perth, Australia. She says she is going to work on her Ph.D. and do some writing while continuing to fight against violence against women.
