After what could be viewed as a successful five days of curling at the U-18 Provincial Curling Championship in Sexsmith, Grande Prairie’s Team Sonnenberg fell just short of a bid to qualify for the national curling finals in Sudbury, Ontario this April.

Team Cortland Sonnenberg, which also featured Adam Elsenheimer, Jaxon Hiebert and Owne Fenske, finished their round-robin with a 5-2 record, tied for first place with Team Kyler Kurina from Lethbridge. However, Kurina was awarded the first overall seed based on his earlier head-to-head victory in the week against Sonnenberg.

Sonnenberg would then head into the semi-final and defeat Team Jsoua Kroker from Lethbridge 6-3 in the semi-final on Sunday morning to set-up a rematch with Team Kurina.

In a hard-fought final, Kurina’s rink would win the Provincial Championship with a 6-5 victory, after scoring a single in the eighth and final end.

On the girls side, Olivia Jones rink from Airdrie won the championship.

Team Jones finished with a round robin record of 5-2 and had to compete in the semi-final.

Team Jones defeated Team Claire Booth from Red Deer 6-3 in the semi-final on Saturday and then defeated Team Zoe Cinnamon from Cochrane 5-1 in Sunday’s final to clinch their spot in nationals.

Kurina and Jones will now represent Alberta at the U-18 Canadian Championship , which take place in Sudbury, Ontario from April 21-26.

Team Sonnenberg will now prepare for the Artic Winter Games, which go from March 15-21 in Whitehorse.
