Penalties an issue for Storm in game two loss to Saints

Mar 3, 2020 | 10:56 AM

After a heartbreaking game one loss 24 hours earlier, the Grande Prairie Storm couldn’t bounce back against the Spruce Grove in game two, falling 6-0 to the Saints Monday night.

Discipline was an issue for the Storm, as they would take three minor penalties in the first period and would eventually be forced to pay.

After Austin Schellenberg took a tripping penalty late in the first, the Saints headed to their third powerplay of the period and were able to kick off the scoring.

Tanner Klassen would rip a goal home glove side, from the top of the left circle on Lars Kaliel to give the Saints a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Early in the second, the train to the penalty box continued for the Storm. The squad took four minor penalties in a span of less than five minutes.

On the powerplay’s the Saints would add two goals from Seth Fyten and one from Nick Leyer to quickly put the Saints up 4-0.

Spruce Grove added two more goals in the third and pick up the 6-0 win and a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The Saints finished the night four-for-seven with the extra man, extending their powerplay percentage to 42% for the series.

Feyten led the way for the Saints with a four-point night.

The teams will take an off-day Tuesday, before returning to the ice on Wednesday and Thursday for games three and four, where the Storm look to keep their season alive.

Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Revolution Place.
