Storm drop marathon game five in Spruce Grove

Mar 8, 2020 | 9:08 AM

For the third time in the series, the Grande Prairie Storm and Spruce Grove Saints needed overtime to decide a winner.

Saturday night’s pivotal game five of the series ended up being the longest of the series to date, needing a third overtime period before Cole Basnett’s second goal of the game at the 1:24 mark gave the home town Saints a 4-3 win, and a 3 games to 2 lead in the series.

After a scoreless opening period, Storm captain Jackson Wozniak would open the scoring 2:45 into the second.

But as has been the case throughout the series, the Saints power play would provide a significant part of their offence on the night.

Brayden Nicholetts would convert on the man advantage at the 9:26 mark to tie the game at one.

But just 28 seconds later, Wozniak would add his second of the night to restore the Storm lead.

Two more power play goals by the Saints – one from Basnett late in the second and one from Graham Gamache early in the third – would give the Saints their first lead of the night.

The Saints are now 11/25 with the power play in the series.

But with 4:19 left in regulation, Ethan Strang would get a power play goal of his own to tie the game for the Storm, and set the stage for what would end up being a marathon overtime session.

The game wound up being the second longest in Storm history, bested only by the 41:51 seconds of overtime needed to complete a 4-3 win over Sherwood Park in game six of their 2009 North Division semi final series.

Kaeden Lane was once again exceptional in net for the Storm, making 54 saves in the loss.

At the other end, Matthew Davis stopped 42 shots in the Saints goal.

Game six of the series is set for Tuesday night at Revolution Place, beginning at 7:30.
