Northern Twistmasters Arm Wrestling Club excited to host Provincial Championship

Mar 12, 2020 | 5:30 AM

The Northern Twistmasters Arm Wrestling Club is hosting the Alberta Provincial Armwrestling Championship this May long weekend.

The tournament is expected to bring together 200 athletes from across the province, with many of those trying to reach the national championship in Manitoba later in the year.

The Northern Twistmasters club last hosted provincials in 2003.

“We’ve chartered a couple of busses for the pro classes. We got one bus leaving from Lethbridge and grabbing guys in Calgary and another one leaving Red Deer and grabbing some people from Edmonton. We’ll have former world champions vying for provincial titles again,” said Doug Curtiss, a coach at the Northern Twistmasters Arm Wrestling Club.

One thing that is unique about the tournament is that anyone at any level can compete.

The weekend tournament will see a novice tournament take place on Saturday to give anybody a chance to try the sport, and possibly move on to nationals.

“This tournament has something for everybody, if you’ve never arm-wrestled before and you want to give it a try, we’ve got that novice tournament. If you aren’t sure where you stand and haven’t pulled in a couple of years, you can try the tournament and if you do well you could qualify for the provincial championship the next day,” said Curtiss.

At the moment, there isn’t online registration for the tournament as it will be done on-site at the event.

Curtiss also expects a bit of an uptick in attendance, as worlds will be held in the United States towards the end of 2020, which makes costs cheaper for those vying for a spot in nationals and worlds.

Local pullers, Gary MacDonald and Joe Fox, will both be at the tournament. Both of the pullers are from the Peace Region and are highly ranked in the world standings.

The tournament is also seeking sponsorships for the event.

Provincials will be held from May 16-18 at the club.
