County of Grande Prairie taking precautions to minimize spread of COVID-19

Mar 13, 2020 | 1:56 PM

The County of Grande Prairie says they are doing what they can to minimize the spread of the novel coronavirus.

So far, events such as the Farm Family Banquet and the Agri-Show have been postponed.

Dan Lemieux, Community Services Director with the County, says they are following Alberta Health’s recommendation to cancel events of 250 people or more, and protecting those who are more at risk for the virus.

“(The) Farm Family Banquet was an example where there was going to be seniors… Alberta Health Services doesn’t want a gathering of more than 50 people, if seniors are involved. So, that would be, certainly, an example of that.”

He says they will be doing risk assessments for the other events and meetings to see what should be cancelled.

Lemieux says they have also restricted work-related travel outside of the province of Alberta.

“Also, if someone has travelled outside of the province for personal reasons, they are being assessed, we’re doing a risk assessment when they come back to Grande Prairie, just to ensure that it’s safe for them to return to work, and some of them will probably be asked to self-isolate for 14 days, depending on where their travels took them.”

County Reeve, Leanne Beaupre, says they will be maintaining essential services while following the guidelines.

“We are taking all the precautions for both our staff and the public, but we will also be maintaining municipal services that are important to the everyday lives of the people in the County of Grande Prairie.”

Alberta Health Services is advising people cancel all non-essential travel, and to call Health Link at 811 if they believe they have been exposed to the virus or are returning from travelling abroad.
