University of Alberta faces huge job loss

The University Of Alberta will be losing more than 1,000 jobs due to funding cuts.

President of the university, David Turpin, made the announcement yesterday saying that 400 positions had already been axed, and that he expects there to be at least 600 more layoffs by next year.

This news follows schools like the University of Calgary, SAIT, and NAIT, announcing they will all be cutting hundreds of jobs due to the funding loss.

The Ministry of Advanced Education’s total operating expenses were cut by about $346 million, with the University of Alberta swallowing a $110-million loss in funding.

Turpin said the university is working with the province to figure out a way to mange with the cuts, and that they hope they can save around 200 to 300 jobs.
