Mayor Given provides update on Grande Prairie COVID-19 response

Mar 16, 2020 | 5:07 PM

Mayor Bill Given spoke to the media Monday afternoon about how the city has responded to COVID-19.

All rec centers and city facilities have been shut down, with no timetable for a return. This includes Centre 2000, Centre for Creative Arts, City on 99, Golden Age Centre, Grande Prairie Curling Centre, Grande Prairie Indoor Soccer, Grande Prairie Live Theatre, the Soccer Pitch, South Bear Creek Park buildings, and Eastlink Centre.

The Province of Alberta’s economy has been hit big hard with COVID-19, it has affected gas prices, oil companies, and big and small businesses.

Given says he’ll make sure that the residents of Grande Prairie are heard at the provincial and federal tables.

“We will do what we can to ensure that local business continues to function and we will ensure that Grande Prairie’s residents and businesses are represented at any of those federal and provincial tables so that they can know they will receive the supports from those other two orders of government,” said Given.

Mayor Given also spoke about members in the community stocking up at the grocery store and says there’s no need to do it.

“I would recommend that people buy what they need and that they don’t overdo it. There are many people in the community who cannot afford to go and stock up on a huge amount of supply and we need to ensure that there are things on the shelf for those people who were living paycheque to paycheque prior to this emergency.”

Given also went onto say that he’s confident with his team at the City of Grande Prairie.

“I’m so confident in our teams at the City of Grande Prairie and throughout the region, and I think that if people keep their heads about them were going to be fine as a community.”

Given says that council will resume on March 23.
