United Way requesting donations and volunteers to help vulnerable people during COVID-19 outbreak

Mar 17, 2020 | 5:30 AM

United Way Alberta Northwest is taking steps to help vulnerable people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They announced yesterday that they have partnered with local stakeholders to support Grande Prairie and the surrounding area.

Jamie Craig, Executive Director for United Way Alberta Northwest, says they are going to help those that the most vulnerable have access to food and supplies if they cannot get them themselves.

“When I say vulnerable, I mean immunocompromised, seniors, and then maybe disabled people as well, who aren’t able, nor should they be going to high-traffic areas to retrieve groceries, prescriptions, things like that.”

Craig says they have partnered with realtors from the Sutton Group, and are trying to help “flatten the curve” of the outbreak.

“What we’re trying to do is two things; we’re trying to educate people a little bit, (on) how to kind of mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, and then we’re also trying to increase the food supply and services to the lower-income individuals or families.”

They are asking anyone who can to donate, and Craig says all the money raised now goes directly to helping those who need it during the coronavirus pandemic.

United Way Alberta Northwest is also planning on working with superintendents on plans they may have to provide meals to schoolchildren.
