Town of Sexsmith declares state of local emergency during COVID-19 pandemic

Mar 18, 2020 | 2:15 PM

The Town of Sexsmith has declared a state of local emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a release, the Town says the declaration will allow them to enact additional powers to fight the spread of the coronavirus.

“In light of the fact that the City of Grande Prairie has declared a state of local emergency, the Town is doing the same in order to be proactive and recognize that as a region we need to work together to deal with this situation strategically,” said Mayor Kate Potter in a release.

“We are not alone in our Province in making this declaration. The declaration will help us act quickly should the need arise. All core services will continue to run to ensure you are protected and we can mitigate risks.”

The Town says they have a business continuity plan in place to ensure core services, including emergency services, remain accessible to residents.

“We will continue to work with our partners GPREP (Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership) to offer the best care for all of our residents.” said Potter.

A full list of operational changes can be found at the Town’s website.
