Grande Prairie catholic schools to make and deliver meals to those in need

Mar 26, 2020 | 5:13 PM

The Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools Education Foundation and Division are now going to provide 200 meals a week for families, and 2000 meals a week for residents of Rotary House.

Both the foundation and the school division cite the current COVID-19 health pandemic, and economic difficulties it has caused, as a reason for the new initiative.

“We are proud to take on the task of preparing 200 meals a week for families and 2000 meals a week for residents of Rotary House” said Executive Director Kari Prichard. “The response from families has been amazing. The families often cry when we bring them their meal, no-one should worry about feeding their family.”

Superintendent of Schools, Karl Germann, says they are going to use the commercial kitchen in St. John Paul II, the kitchen in St. Clement, and three division vehicles to deliver the food, with Foundation and Division staff preparing and making the deliveries.

“We are in full support of the Education Foundation’s efforts. We have re-allocated staff, equipment, vehicles and money to help facilitate this urgent need,” said Germann. “Foundation and School staff work in small groups 2-4 and are following the Social Distancing guidelines set by the Province. Each building is cleaned throughout the day and a deep scrub is completed in the evenings.”

Germann adds the fund to put this all together will come from the School Nutrition program and the Government’s Emergency fund.

The GPCSD is also asking the community to make donations to the Salvation Army, or to visit an online form to donate to the Foundation’s Snack Program.
