NDP calls for firing of Shandro over alleged confrontation

EDMONTON – The Alberta Opposition is calling for Health Minister Tyler Shandro to be fired over allegations he has verbally attacked online critics and threatened to involve legislature security staff.

NDP Leader Rachel Notley says Shandro is exhibiting reckless, intimidating behaviour that cannot be allowed during the COVID-19 crisis.

Notley was responding to a CBC report that Shandro in recent days has verbally abused critics of himself and of his wife over unsubstantiated allegations of conflict of interest between the government and her supplementary health-benefits company.

In leaked emails, Shandro calls one critic “crazy” and threatens to involve the legislature’s “protective services” unit against another.

Dr. Mukarram Zaidi, the couple’s neighbour and someone they know, says the Shandros confronted him in front of his Calgary home last weekend and berated him while his family looked on from inside.

Shandro’s office says the minister did speak to Zaidi but not in an emotional way.

The office has not responded to or explained what was meant by Shandro’s email comments about involving legislature security against a private citizen.
