Alberta expands child care for essential service workers

Apr 1, 2020 | 4:47 PM

The Government of Alberta is expanding its list of essential services workers who may qualify for a child care space at select licensed child care centers.

Child care for essential workers previously only applied to front line healthcare workers, critical infrastructure workers and first responders.

The list has now been expanded to include workers in the transportation, industrial, food and shelter and construction industries. A full list of who qualifies as an essential worker can be found at the Alberta government website.

The centres that have re-opened are being restricted to only hold 30 people at a time, including staff. All staff will have to adhere to strict sanitization practices based on specific instructions from Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health.

Building Blocks Daycare Centre and Stepping Stones Day Care-Westside are the only locations that are open in Grande Prairie. All other child care centres are to remain closed at this time.

Parents who qualify for subsidy will receive it and centres will charge their typical rate, within reason. Parents who are eligible should only access this child care if it is the only way they will be able to go to their work in a core service sector.

The government says child care centres will be financially compensated for reopened spaces that are not filled. They will also receive up to $500 for the purchase of cleaning supplies.
