Province, Feds reach agreement to boost meat inspector capacity

Apr 1, 2020 | 5:20 PM

The Government of Alberta is partnering with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to increase food inspector capacity.

Training to allow provincial meat inspectors to be deployed into high-priority federally licensed plants in Alberta will get underway soon. The province says this is a response to an increasing demand for more food inspectors.

“It is critical for Alberta families, our food supply and to our economy that the meat industry operates at its maximum capacity,” said Devin Dreeshen, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.

This increased demand is a result of COVID-19, which has seen demand for products like beef sky rocket while people have been stocking up.

The province say these redeployments will ensure the continued capability to provide meat inspections in the province and keep food products on shelves.

“By working together, our governments have ensured we have a COVID-19 contingency plan for inspection services,” said Marie-Claudeo Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Steps have also been taken to increase provincial inspector capacity by bringing back retired inspectors.
