Alberta Summer Games in Lethbridge postponed to 2021

Apr 2, 2020 | 2:57 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Another major sporting event has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Lethbridge 2020 Alberta Summer Games Society has elected to postpone the games until the summer of 2021.

“This decision was made after careful consideration of the current state of COVID-19 in the province and the likelihood of being able to safely host the Lethbridge 2020 Alberta Summer Games,” reads a statement from the Society.

All stakeholders have been advised of the decision, which has been supported unanimously.

The Society says they understand that this decision will be disappointing for athletes, coaches, officials, parents, sponsors, supporters and volunteers.

“The health and wellbeing of our young athletes was at the forefront of this decision. While postponing these games is being done with an abundance of caution, we believe this will ultimately prove to be the right decision for all involved.”

The pandemic has already hampered the preparations for zone tryouts.

The group, however, remains optimistic about the future.

“Since announcing that the 2020 Alberta Summer Games would be held here, we’ve built an incredible leadership team and recruited wonderful community volunteers. We are still committed to welcoming our young, talented Alberta athletes to Lethbridge next summer. We will now focus our collective energies on making next summer’s games the best – and safest – games ever held.”

Originally, the Games would have taken place July 23-26 in Lethbridge.
