Grande Prairie seeing colder temperatures than usual for the beginning of spring

Apr 2, 2020 | 5:30 AM

Grande Prairie is seeing colder weather than usually expected for this time of year.

Doug Gillham, a meteorologist with The Weather Network, says in Northern Alberta, there aren’t always ‘normal’ temperatures regarding spring weather.

“This part of the country, famous for its wild swings in temperature, and especially during the spring, a season of transition as we transition from winter to summer, But as we look at the long-term averages for the month of April, we’re typically around plus six for a high, around the first of April, so our temperatures are running fifteen to twenty degrees colder than normal.”

Gillham does say that while not historical, the amount of snow for this time of year is unusual, and that what Grande Prairie is seeing is closer to January weather.

He says that the colder temperatures are expected to last a few more days, but that unexpected changes in temperatures can happen.

“During the weekend (April 3 to 4), the cold pattern starts to relax, so temperatures stay well below seasonal. Looking ahead to next week, we’re going to be closer to seasonal, though still on the cool side of seasonal, so, it’ll feel more like spring compared to what we’re seeing this week. We’re watching for the potential of another shot of chilly weather at the end of the week and weekend.”

Gillham adds that March and April temperatures are not good indicators of what the growing and summer seasons will be like and that the warm weather will come, but not right away.
