The City of Grande Prairie is adjusting their transit service hours and adding on-demand evening hours.

Effective on Monday, April 13, weekday service from Monday to Friday will change for several routes, including:

  • The frequency of Routes 1, 2, and 3 during peak periods will change from 30-minute service to 60-minute service.
  • All routes will end about one hour earlier in the evening.
  • Routes 1 to 4’s last bus will leave the Town Centre Mall at 7:15 p.m.
  • Route 5’s last bus will leave the Prairie Mall at 6:35 p.m.
  • Route 6’s last bus will leave the Eastlink Centre at 6:59 p.m.

Saturday transit service is also being adjusted, including:

  • All routes will end about two hours earlier in the evening.
  • Routes 1 to 4’s last bus will leave the Town Centre Mall at 6:15 p.m.
  • Route 5’s last bus will leave the Prairie Mall at 6:05 p.m.
  • Route 6’s last bus will leave the Grande Prairie Regional College at 6:21 p.m.

The City says no changes are being made to Sunday or holiday service and are asking people to limit public transit use to only essential travel such as medical appointments, grocery shopping and work.

They are also adding on-demand service in the evening, which will be done by-reservation and is to begin on Monday, April 13 as a pilot project.

The service is to be limited to essential trips to work, medical appointments, for groceries and pharmacies.

It will be available Monday to Friday from 8:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m., and on Saturdays from 7:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.

The reservations must be made before noon on the same day of the needed trip and can be made by calling 780-830-7433. Bookings require a name, email address, phone number and nearest bus stop number or address, as well as the destination.

The Grande Prairie Accessible Transit service will also be adjusting their service effective April 13. Changes include a two-passenger limit where possible, and Monday to Saturday operations will go from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. with the last pickup at 8:15 p.m.

Sunday operations will go from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with the last pickup at 6:15 p.m.

Dispatcher hours are also being changed to Monday to Friday between 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for bookings.

The City says thorough cleansing and disinfection procedures are still being done for buses when they are taken out of service, and additional and enhanced resources and cleaning protocols have also been put in place.
