Apr 10, 2020 | 3:50 PM

The province of Alberta added 49 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing it’s total to 1,500 as of April 10. No cases were added in the North Zone on Good Friday, holding Northern Alberta’s total at 97.

Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, provided an update on the COVID-19 situation in Alberta, where she said she is expecting to see the number of confirmed cases across the province increase over the coming days. This comes as testing capacity was expanded back on Wednesday to include all essential workers in the province who are showing symptoms, among others.

Dr. Hinshaw said over the past 24 hours, over 6,000 tests for COVID-19 have been scheduled.

“So I expect the number of tests processed at the lab to rise in the days to come.”

Alberta also saw its highest number of fatalities in one day. Over the past 24 hours, seven more individuals have died from COVID-19 related complications, bringing the provincial total to 39. Four of those fatalities were at the McKenzie Towne Continuing Care Centre in Calgary, where 17 residents have now died from the disease.

One other fatality occured in the Calgary Zone Friday, while two were reported in the Edmonton Zone.

121 more individuals are confirmed to have recovered over the past 24 hours, meaning 713 Albertans have recovered from the virus.
