INJURIES ARE NON-LIFE-THREATENING

Man surrenders to police after alleged shooting in Red Deer

Apr 10, 2020 | 12:09 PM

Red Deer RCMP say one person is in hospital and recovering from gunshot wounds suffered during an incident Thursday night on the city’s east side.

Mounties received calls just before 6 p.m. about shots being fired in a parking lot near Holy Family School in Deer Park.

Investigation determined that two males allegedly met at the parking lot, and upon arrival, one of the males, a 20-year-old from Red Deer, fired a gun at the other male, a 21-year-old also from Red Deer.

The male who fired the gun fled in an SUV, but not without several individuals having witnessed the incident, police say.

The victim was taken to hospital and is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.

Shortly after police began investigating, they moved to contain an area around the male suspect’s home in the Anders area. Along with the RCMP Police Dog Service, the RCMP Emergency Response Team was deployed to assist with containment and negotiations.

Those efforts were successful and the suspect surrendered at 1 a.m. on April 10 (Friday). He was arrested without incident, and remains in custody awaiting a judicial hearing. Once that takes place, his name will be released.

Police remain on scene in the Anders neighbourhood for the purpose of a search and neighbourhood check-ins. This is anticipated to last into Friday afternoon.

RCMP believe this is an isolated incident and say the public is not at risk.
