Grande Prairie Mayor impressed by adapting businesses, encourages the public to be understanding

Apr 15, 2020 | 7:30 AM

The Mayor of Grande Prairie says the city and its businesses seem to be adapting well to closures and changes caused by COVID-19.

Mayor Bill Given says while it is important to note not all businesses are able to adapt and continue services, he noted that some are doing well.

“I am very impressed with those businesses who can adapt. The entrepreneurial spirit of Grande Prairie businesses has come shining through. People have adapted very quickly to using online tools where necessary or possible, people are changing to be able to adapt to the physical distancing requirements.”

“The biggest thing that I think that any of our businesses of any category need, is for the public to remain adaptable and understanding as these new measures are implemented.”

Mayor Given does add that he has heard a few reports of negative interactions and behavior from customers towards staff.

“Particularly grocery stores, that residents and customers are not as understanding as maybe they could be, and that some of that frustration is being directed towards the staff in the grocery stores,” said Given. “That’s really disappointing because those staff are continuing to go to work, continuing to put themselves in situations where they are more exposed to the virus than many of us who are able to work from home.”

The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership (GPREP) is reminding residents to limit how often they leave their home, even for grocery shopping and essential trips.
