Province adds 126 new COVID-19 cases as technical issue delays regional data

Apr 15, 2020 | 4:35 PM

The province added 126 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, but Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw could not provide many more details as a technical issue with Alberta Health’s aggregate data reporting has delayed the relaying of information on cases by zone.

Dr. Hinshaw was able to report that the province now has 1,996 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of April 15 and that 85,502 tests have been completed at the provincial lab. She also said no additional deaths have been reported, keeping the provincial total at 48.

Information on cases by zone and the number of recoveries will be updated during Thursday’s news conference.

Dr. Hinshaw did report that an outbreak of COVID-19 has been found at the Kearl Lake oilsands work site north of Fort McMurray. Three people have tested positive. Dr. Hinshaw also said three others have been tested and are isolating.

Premier Jason Kenney also spoke during Wednesday’s COVID-19 update, where he did state that the number of hospitalizations and ICU cases remains below AHS’ modelling projections.

“The most encouraging news for Albertans continues to be our relatively low rate of hospitalization and ICU admissions.”

As of April 15, 44 Albertans are being treated in hospitals for COVID-19. Ten individuals are in intensive care units.

“Those numbers have been stable for the last several days, in fact, the ICU number is down slightly and they continue to be well below the numbers projected in AHS’ modelling that we presented a week ago.”

Kenney touted Alberta’s early adoption of aggressive testing and noted the province’s testing is higher than any other province on a per capita basis.

Testing has averaged about 1,900 Albertans per day and will continue to be ramped up, according to the Premier.

The increase in the expected number of tests to be completed comes as testing qualification was expanded to all Albertans showing symptoms of COVID-19 on Monday.
