A woman in her 80’s from the Manoir du Lac Continuing Care Facility in McLennan has become the seventh person in Northern Alberta to have died from COVID-19, as the province announced two additional deaths for April 16.

The woman is the fifth resident of that senior’s facility to pass away from COVID-19 related complications. Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, says they have now confirmed 38 cases at that facility between residents and staff as of April 16.

Dr. Hinshaw announced one other fatality Thursday, which was a man in his 70’s from a continuing care home in High River.

Dr. Hinshaw also announced that the province saw an increase of 162 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Alberta Thursday, as the province surpassed 2,000 confirmed cases to reach 2,158 as of April 16. The 162 new cases are the most new cases over a 24-hour period the province has seen during the pandemic.

Regional data reporting was unavailable for the second straight day Thursday, as a fire at the provincial data centre late Tuesday night has stopped the flow of regional data reporting.

Dr. Hinshaw says they hope to have that information available soon.

“Teams are working around the clock to restore all applications as quickly as possible,” said Dr. Hinshaw. “We appreciate your patience as we get the system running again.
