Fire crews extinguish apartment balcony fire in Lakeland
The Grande Prairie Fire Department were called to the Lakeland neighbourhood this morning, where they responded to a fire on the balcony of an apartment building.
Crews arrived on the scene at 9225 Lakeland Drive at 5:12 a.m., and discovered visible smoke coming from a fourth floor balcony. Crews were able to access the building and quickly extinguish the fire, limiting the damage to the building in the process.
The fire had originated in a planter box on the balcony, and the cause of the blaze was determined to be smoker’s materials. The Grande Prairie Fire Department reminds the public not to extinguish or dispose of cigarettes in planter boxes. The peat moss within the boxes is flammable, and has been the cause of many fires in the past.
No injuries were reported in relation to this incident.
