Warmer temperatures returning to Grande Prairie

Apr 16, 2020 | 12:34 PM

After a long winter, it appears temperatures are set to finally spring up in Grande Prairie.

According to Environment Canada, Grande Prairie will get some cooler weather on Friday, but things will turn the corner heading into this weekend.

“It’s warm today, a cold front will move through on Friday and then after that an upper ridge builds back in and it looks like most of Alberta will see temperatures finally above normal for the first few days next week,” said Alysa Peterson, a Meteorologist with Environment Canada

Saturday and Sunday are expecting highs of plus 10 and 11 in the city, while Monday and Tuesday could see Grande Prairie reach highs of plus 14 and 15.

As temperatures warm, Peterson says that the month of May could look promising for residents in Grande Prairie and the surrounding area. On March 31, Environment Canada predicted that most of the province is expecting temperatures 50-60 per cent lower than normal, but Grande Prairie could luck out and get some much-needed warm weather.

“What’s interesting about this, is the pattern set-up right now is very warm for B.C. and with Grande Prairie being on the western part of Alberta, that upper ridge pattern that we’re expected to maintain could push into the Grande Prairie area.”

“So, Grande Prairie is probably closer to what B.C. might be seeing, something more normal or maybe a little bit above normal for May.”
