Canada-U.S. border restrictions extended for 30 days

OTTAWA, ONT – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Saturday that it will be at least another month before operations at the national border returns to normal.

He says it was a joint decision by officials in both countries.

“This is an important decision and one that will keep people on both sides of the border safe.”

It was announced last month that the border would only be open to essential-travel.

The current agreement was set to expire on April 21.

“It’s another example of the excellent collaboration between our two countries.”

Trudeau said earlier this week that it would be “some time” before Canada would be ready to relax international travel restrictions as a way of limiting the spread of COVID-19.

As of Saturday, April 18, over 715,000 Americans have tested positive for the virus, resulting in the deaths of 32,985 people.

The numbers in Canada, even as a percentage of population are much smaller. 32,412 cases have been confirmed, including 1,346 deaths.
