Province launches new volunteer tool and recognition program

The province has launched a new tool to connect Albertans with volunteer opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic and is asking anyone who is healthy to consider volunteering their time.

At the April 22 COVID-19 update, the province announced the launch of the Alberta Cares Connector, a service that will list volunteer opportunities for Albertans to enlist in.

“What really speaks to our spirit of volunteerism is that our province has more than 26,400 non-profit organizations,” said Alberta’s Minister of Culture, Multiculturism and Status of Women, Leela Sharon Aheer. “These organizations are integral in delivering the essential services we rely on everyday, especially during this crisis. Each year, more than 1.6 million Albertans provide more than 262 million volunteer hours to the non-profit and voluntary sector, at a value of $5.6 billion.”

“Volunteers are the heartbeat of non-profits, and if you are healthy, we need you, Albertans, to give their time and talents now, more than ever.”

The Alberta Cares Connector website will allow organizations to list their volunteer opportunities.

Along with the Alberta Cares Connector, Premier Jason Kenney announced the Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition program, that is to honour volunteers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Northern Lights program keeps a platform commitment to spotlight those who personify the Alberta sprit by giving back to our community through volunteerism.” said Premier Kenney, in a release.

Volunteers can be nominated by fellow Albertans, and there are no requirements for hours of service. Nominations are now currently being accepted online.
